Shereen Quttaineh

Shereen Quttaineh is a textile artist whose practice explores materiality, embroidery, free stitching to embrace slowness, preserve memory, critique labour and recontextualize culture and craft. Quttaineh’s practice is intuitive and process driven, deconstructing traditional techniques such as tatreez, and using them as tools for storytelling and resistance, particularly when it comes to Palestinian and anti-colonial resistance. Quttaineh is deeply driven by the untamedness of nature, seasonal cycles, symbolism, foraging and food culture, examining humanity’s relationship with all these things. Reclaimed fabrics are central to her work for the histories they hold and their capacity for transformation, allowing textiles to function as vessels of lived experience, reflection, and oppose the speed and excess of contemporary life. Shereen is based in Amman, Jordan, and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCEi) from the University of Nottingham, UK (2017), and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Yarmouk University, Jordan (2000).
