My Memory Is Full of Ghosts

Syria, 2024
75 minutes, Arabic with English subtitles

Like a visual lament, the film My Memory Is Full of Ghosts explores a reality caught between the past, present, and future in the city of Homs, Syria. Behind a self-portrait of exhausted inhabitants searching for normal life, the film captures truths from those who stayed and those who returned to a city changed forever.

The memories of a city haunted by destruction, deformation, and loss emerge.

Through patient reflections and static visual compositions, the film reveals how war reshapes place and weaves memory. The voices of residents, heard off-camera, bring a ghostly presence and reflect a community struggling with a haunted past while cautiously rebuilding life amid the ruins of the present.

The film premiered at the International Festival Vision du Réel, receiving a special mention. It also won the Best Arab Documentary Award at the El Gouna Film Festival in Egypt and Best Film at the Syrian Documentary Film Days in Denmark.

The film is followed by a special conversation with its director, Anas Zawahreh, originally from Syria and currently in residence at MMAG.
